ARTHROPODS, are the most diverse group of organisms in the planet. Insects in particular comprises arounf 1,000,000 known species and around 4,000,000 – 6,500,000 undescribed species or around 75% of all animals and 50% of all living organisms.
The same pattern is observed locally, with around 22,000 known insect species compared to 1,500 species of land vertebrates, and 8,000 known species of planrs, and that 70% of which are found nowhere else.
Despite that, many species still remain unknown to science. Suprisingly, even relatively weel studied areas, such as Mt. Makiling still houses several undescribed arthropod species. which proves the immense diversity of terrestrial arthropods which remain undiscovered.
Unfortunately. despite the immense diversity, many of the native species are also under threat of extinction primarily due to habitat destruction or modification, misuse of pesticides and even hunting.
With that, this page aims to promote the study of Philippine Terrestrial Arthropods and disseminate the current knowledge on these often neglected diversity -CC Lucanas
